This year, my students will "Go Global" during guided reading and writer’s workshop. Many of my students have never traveled to other countries around the world and they do not read or watch the news on T.V. We will read and write about current events through reading in our Time For Kids.
For the past four years, I have been teaching English Language Learners in my classroom.
I anticipate having more of the same eager to learn students this year. I want to provide real-world, active learning for my students. They do not like worksheets. My students enjoy knowing what is going on in the world they live in. So for every article that they read and write about, we will locate exactly where the event took place on the map. My kids come from low income homes. Our school is a Title 1 school, which means that lunch is free for most of the students. The parents are very supportive in their children's education. They allow their kids to participate in my before and afterschool programs, where we practice / re-teach reading comprehension skills and hands on math activities. My students are very interested in using technology, thus we integrate it in our lessons daily. Also, I would like to use the books with Word to Make You Sound Great and Smart, to build vocabulary.
My students will be able to use the Time for Kids Magazine to read and write about the articles that most interest them. Reading something they like will help them learn to enjoy reading. When my students read more, it helps to promote better word choice in their writing. Time for Kids will help to provide current events for which student can learn about and share with a partner, group, or the whole class. Most of all, the Time for Kids Magazine, will help my students with a year long class project called "Where in the World?" In this on going activity, students will read articles and cut them out. They will find the place of the event on a class map, located in the Current Events Center. Students will attach a string of yarn from the article to the location on the map in which the event took place. This will help to give students a visual and help activate background knowledge for better understanding. Words to Make You Sound Great and Smart will help with word choice.
My students are not exposed to the current events around the world.
They only get to experience this at school. If teachers do not help build background knowledge for students, they will not comprehend what they read. I feel that using Time for Kids in my classroom helps my students to become excited about what is going on in the world. Character Ed. - The students will learn how people are showing good leadership, and responsibility. They will learn to use descriptive words from the books.
