My students need a variety of poetry books, like "Where the Sidewalk Ends" and " Be Glad Your Nose Is on Your Face and Other Poems, " plus publishing supplies to guide them into little poets with their own published poetry books.
Imagine walking into a room with a classroom full of students proudly showcasing their published poetry books.
In order to accomplish this, my students need quality mentor texts and interactive read alouds for inspiration and materials to publish their poetry.
My 4th graders attend an urban school in Wisconsin.
Despite their various backgrounds and low socioeconomic status (approximately 95% receive free or reduced lunch), they work together to create a community in the classroom. My students take tremendous pride in their work when they know others will be viewing it.
My Project
My students will begin this poetry unit by listening to poetry and realistic fiction books that have been carefully selected to show a variety of poetic forms. Various topics are included to invoke feelings and emotions from my students while I read to them. Additionally, during this unit, students will spend time reading poetry independently to find poems that have meaning to them. After students have a deeper understanding of poetry, students will begin crafting their own poems, with the final goal of publishing their favorite pieces in their own personal poetry books.
With your generous donations, my students will be exposed to many great poets such as Shel Silverstein and Jack Prelutsky and will even get the opportunity to publish their own poetic writings in a book!
