This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Many people have terrible fear of public speaking. A fear that does not go away even as adults. Building confidence in a student and allowing them to practice this skill of speaking publicly can greatly diminish this fear. The more a student speaks in front a group, the easier it will become.
My students approach life with the enthusiasm and curiosity that all five-year-old children seem to have in abundance.
Despite living in a low socioeconomic area where their parents struggle to make ends meet, they are incredibly hopeful and looking forward to the future. My students' parents want the best education possible for them, but due to financial constraints, many cannot afford to have books, puzzles and other educational toys at home. It is up to me and the school to provide these wonderful, amazing, eager and bright kids with a wide variety of learning tools. We are a Title 1 school, which means that we do get funds to improve the academic achievement of the disadvantaged, but not enough to provide every classroom with all the "extras" that they need. In fact due to all the budget cuts, we are running very low on essential supplies such as pencils, crayons, scissors, erasers, and even multipurpose paper.
My Project
Not only are many students fearful of speaking publicly, but they can also be very shy and speak so softly that they can barely be heard. A wireless microphone will be instrumental in getting my students to practice speaking in front of their peers and also to be heard by all. Last year I bought a toy microphone and everybody wanted to use it to give their opinions and share their ideas. Even my shy ones had no problem getting up to the front of the room and talking using the toy microphone. I think that having a real microphone would be equally successful. The microphone will help take away some the fear of public speaking and give my students confidence in themselves.
Taking the panic out of public speaking seems like a very difficult task to accomplish.
I think that with the use of a wireless microphone, that my students will have fun and enjoy speaking. If they practice speaking in front of a group often enough in kindergarten with me, their confidence will be built and they will go into first grade being less fearful. And hopefully this confidence will follow them into adulthood.
