My Students

If you have seen a chemistry classroom in person, on TV, or in a movie, you have probably observed students carefully mixing and measuring colorful, bubbling chemical liquids in flasks and collecting gas into tubes. The specially designed tubes are critical tools for college bound chemistry students

Our urban public high school is as diverse racially, culturally, and economically as our large metropolitan city.

Our student population is by majority Hispanic (70%), followed by Asian, White, Black, Pacific Islander, and various other groups. Almost all my students classify in our state's lowest economic category, which qualifies them for financial assistance such as reduced lunch and free tutoring programs. For nearly 50% of my students, the primary language that their family speaks at home is not English. Many of our students were classified as ESL students (English as a Second Language), when they began high school, but have now been reclassified as English Proficient. Due to funding cuts, science classes at our public high school have recently increased to average sizes of 47 students per class. We are not a private school, so in order to give these young students an updated, college prep chemistry lab experience, our science lab programs truly survive from donations and grants.

My Project

Students can use glass flasks and eudiometers to analyze and identify unknown gases - a crucial analytical skill for careers in medicine or research. These tools are standard for any chemistry lab classroom- but unfortunately they are expensive. Small tubes - just 25 to 50 mL in size - are about $20 each. But the good new is that the glassware can last for many years. The glassware we currently have has survived for over 10 years. But it is now time to replace old and cracked glassware. With the flasks students can perform lab experiments to precisely mix and dilute solutions to specific concentrations (molarities). With the eudiometers, students can perform experiments that produce gases and then collect and isolate the gas samples. Also, they will perform these two advanced labs: (1) The determination of the density and molecular weight of an unknown volatile liquid substance by heating it and analyzing its vapor, and (2) the determination of the molar volume of a gas.

To keep our chemistry labs up to date, we must rely on donations or grants.

For the seventh year, our school district has imposed financial cuts that have decreased the number of teachers working, decreased our annual science budgets to $1.50 per student, and increased our class sizes to 46-47 students per science classroom. Your donation will allow students access to a better, college prep level lab experience, motivating many to continue striving for excellence in math based science careers.
