This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Let me get right to the point ... A reliable pencil sharpener is one of the most important tools in my classroom!
I work at a Title 1 school where many of the students are economically disadvantaged.
My students are hard-working and eager to learn. The students often come to school lacking basic supplies such as pencils and paper. This year I am teaching math to two classes in second grade. I want my students to have the tools that they need to be successful. I want to excite my students about learning and improve their math fluency! Learning addition and subtraction facts is my goal this year! It is my job to provide my students with experiences and lessons to achieve their success. It is important that my students are engaged in fun, exciting, and challenging activities.
My Project
I am requesting a heavy duty electric pencil sharpener and pencils for my classroom. I have already bought 2 other sharpeners this year that have broken or overheated quickly. I tried using hand held sharpeners, but they broke or my students lost them. I even purchased a small sharpener for each of my 50 students for Christmas, but that has not solved the problem.
Pencils are used every day especially since I teach two math classes. We solve many math problems, erase mistakes and then solve again. We write math word problems or enter information into our interactive notebooks. We even use pencils when we write out thank you letters to our wonderful Donors Choose donors!
Having a heavy duty pencil sharpener will guarantee that my students have a sharpened pencil at all times.
They will not have to borrow a pencil from a friend when their pencil breaks as we will now have extras available. Additional pencils and incentive pencils will increase time on task as everyone will have a pencil to use as soon as they enter the classroom.
