I am a third grade special education teacher at P.S. 229. Our school has approximately 1,200 students, including large special education and ESL populations. At P.S. 229, we are dedicated to the academic success of our students, as well as nurturing conscientious citizens. This year we are making a commitment to improve our school recycling program. As part of our efforts, we are going to integrate a Book of the Month to link literacy and science. The book that I selected is "Just a Dream" by Chris Van Allsburg. This fiction book takes a boy who doesn't recycle into the future where he sees what the world will look like if he does not start recycling. Each class in the school would read the book. Once they are finished, they will participate in different follow up activities. Some ideas include creating travel brochures showing what places will look like in the future if no one recycles, making posters about good recycling habits, and writing letters about recycling to parents/guardians and members of the community. The entire project will help students understand the importance of recycling and reinforce good recycling habits on a daily basis in our school. I believe that the vivid illustrations in this book will aide with student comprehension of this subject. In order for us to successfully use this book as the book of the month, we will require 12 copies of the book. This will allow us to give one copy to each grade leader (Pre-K through Grade 6 and special education) as well as place one in our school library, the Principal's library, and the Reading Teachers' library. This book would serve as an excellent tool in reinforcing the habits of good citizenship in regards to recycling. Thank you.
