My Project

I love my students and am passionate about exposing them to different types of literature and facilitating related thinking, analysis, and discussions.

I plan to use my requested materials for "book club"-like units.

In these units, my students self-select a novel to read with a partner or small group that falls into a specific category of texts we are studying. Sometimes these units are identified by genre (gothic, dystopian, etc.) and other times they are identified by format (novels written in verse, graphic novels, etc.). Within their book clubs, students analyze the text they've chosen and continually work to make connections to the unit's anchor text we previously studied as a whole-class. At the end of book clubs, we hold whole-class discussion days in which we compare and contrast all the texts that were explored. These units are extremely valuable because they engage students by giving them freedom of choice while also gently forcing them to work as individuals, in small groups, and as a whole-group. The analysis and communication skill-building that occur throughout are a teacher's dream!

My hope is that adding these new choices through this project will really help engage my students as we discuss the craft choices of these authors, how these choices relate to their overall authorial intent, and what they are possibly saying/questioning about our current society, world, or the human condition.
