Providing Period Products

Help me give my students feminine hygiene producsts in our classroom so that they can take care of their needs without having to run down to our Wellness Center.

My Students

I teach chemistry to 142 students in a large comprehensive high school of about 2000 students in San Francisco. The students across all my chemistry classes come from diverse experiences and backgrounds. Some of them have worked jobs after school until the evenings to support their families. Others are already taking community college classes on top of their high school classes.

Despite being from different backgrounds, one thing my students have in common is their desire to learn and do their best in my class, and I want to give them what they need to succeed.

Their hard work inspires me to also try my best to give them a safe and resourced classroom to facilitate their learning.

My Project

Students learn best when they have basic needs met, including period hygiene. People might be caught off-guard if their periods come at an irregular time, or if they just forgot to bring their hygiene products.

By having period hygiene products in the classroom, stored in a storage unit cart (which will not only hold period product needs but other student needs such as snacks), students can freely grab what they need, when they need them, without running down to our Wellness Center.

Since my classroom is on the third floor and Wellness is on the first, it takes time away from class when students need to run down to get these products. If they are available in the classroom, students can go get them when they need, run to the restroom, and be back in the room in a shorter amount of time.
