Providing Kids with Technology in the Science Classroom!

My students need 8 Chromebooks and 8 covers for these Chromebooks. We will use these at each of my table stations to do research, station work and science simulations.

My Students

I teach the coolest scientists ever, and they need more access to technology in their daily learning! My students love science, especially when we do hands-on activities. Nothing is more wonderful than the din of their excited voices as we explore new concepts and conduct labs in small groups.

I teach science to the 7th graders at Knight Middle School - a Title I school in Louisville.

Almost 80% of our students are on free and reduced lunch plans, and technology access is limited. Many of my students have struggled with school all their lives - very few of them perform at grade-level, and many of them have lost the motivation to do well in school. Their lack of confidence means that it can be a struggle to engage them in daily learning activities. Despite this however, I have seen many of them blossom in the science classroom. The hands-on nature of science learning excites them, and can help children who rarely see the benefit of school feel connected to content in a whole new way. I hope to integrate more technology into my daily lessons to continue to help my students become not only engaged lifelong learners, but also to help them become technologically literate.

My Project

Technology has become a staple in many classrooms - especially in private schools. However, I believe that in public education, the lack of technology in districts with less resources only further widens the achievement gap between high and low performing schools. Almost 20% of our students receive exceptional child education services (ECE) - and many of my students perform well below grade level. Technology is a wonderful tool to increase a teacher's ability to teach diverse learners in a classroom. Because so many of my students are at completely different achievement levels, I have to provide a variety of learning options for them, to make sure I am reaching every learner, regardless of ability! I hope to use the laptops to tailor instruction to suite the needs of my learners. The Chromebooks will allow me to teach my students how to use technology appropriately, and will help make science concepts come to life for them

Many of my students do not have computers or Internet at home, and often this means they are technologically illiterate compared to similarly aged students.

My students deserve to have access to technology in the classroom just as much as their peers in schools with more resources. Many of my students have never been made to feel important, or that they are capable of being successful in school, or in life. As Rita Pierson said, "Every child deserves a hero".
