I teach science to the 7th graders at Knight Middle School - a Title I school in Louisville. Almost 80% of our students are on free and reduced lunch plans, and technology access is limited. Many of my students have struggled with school all their lives - very few of them perform at grade-level, and many of them have lost the motivation to do well in school. Their lack of confidence means that it can be a struggle to engage them in daily learning activities. Despite this however, I have seen many of them blossom in the science classroom. The hands-on nature of science learning excites them, and can help children who rarely see the benefit of school feel connected to content in a whole new way. I hope to integrate more technology into my daily lessons to continue to help my students become not only engaged lifelong learners, but also to help them become technologically literate.
