This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our urban Los Angeles high school serves over two thousand students in grades nine through twelve. Our students are amazing, dedicated and committed to excellence. The students participate in sports, clubs, science fairs, and MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement), winning awards in all of these areas.
Almost all my students will be the first in their families to attend college.
It is my goal to ensure they engage in science methods and are prepared to succeed in college.
Minority enrollment is ninety-eight percent of the student body. Seventy percent of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Our students come from lower socio-economic backgrounds but are geographically close to more affluent parts of the city.
My Project
With our school engaged in Distance Learning, my students work on a variety of virtual activities to understand difficult science concepts. While there are so many amazing online resources, there is no substitution for hands-on investigations. I saw this first hand this summer when I enrolled my six year old son in virtual camps and I saw the enthusiasm and excitement over opening a new bag of science equipment that was mailed to him. Unfortunately, not all students have access to virtual science camps in the summer nor during the year. Educational systems struggle to support equitable opportunities to learn science, as evidenced by persistently lower levels of advanced science studies and STEM career choices by youth from low-income communities.
Income should not dictate access to science supplies and therefore I want to equitably provide all my students a bag of Biology lab supplies to run at home investigations such as testing how sunblock protects us from the sun's UV rays, investigating the biodiversity around their home, pill bug preferences, collecting data on sea ice vs land ice, and modeling a mountain lion freeway corridor as part of our Ecology and Climate Change units.
Equity means barriers so that all students can reach their academic potential. I strongly believe that providing all students with the supplies, giving students the freedom to investigate, fostering curiosity, tying the content to students' lives, and giving all students a voice is a start in making science equitable for all. Please help provide this opportunity to my students if you are able to.
More than half of students from low‑income households
