Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are tough. Unfortunately they have to be tough 100% of the time. They're lives are difficult, they rarely receive support outside of school and are in a constant state of stress.
As a trauma informed teacher, I understand the importance of students freeing their mind and having a break and motivation.
My kiddos are constantly using excess energy combating their stresses and trauma all throughout the school day. It is a basic recommendation to have a moment of joy."Education is the most powerful weapon, which you can use to change the world." —Nelson Mandela
My students come from many different backgrounds.
I teach 5th grade ESL, General education, inclusion class with students with autism and students with IEP. My students are Title I students. They are great students and love learning, especially when it's non-traditional learning. They come from a community filled with poverty, homelessness, and crime, but they are filled with hope. These children attend a public school in an industrial and commercial community of New York City.
I am hoping this project will help my students to continue to celebrate the diversity within themselves and to feel empowered to succeed even when experiencing tumultuous times.
My Project
I work with students who come from low economic backgrounds. These students consist of EOs (English Only) and ELLs (English-Language Learners). My students, like many others, had to stop attending school and continue their learning via distance learning. It hasn't been easy to adjust, since their world has basically turned upside down.
Most of my students are experiencing fear and anxiety.
The COVID-19 pandemic has stopped them from attending school physically and has caused them to break out of their daily routines. With the use of pencils, marker, pens, and whiteboard and snacks my students will be able to learn from home.
A lot of my students are facing fear and food shortages due to their parents' loss of income. I want to give my students some snacks and basic educational supplies to comfort them during the COVID-19 pandemic. No child should go hungry and feel scared. I want to show my students that people care for their well-being and education.
These snacks and writing, drawing and coloring materials will bring comfort and some sort of security to my young students.
I want them to concentrate on their distance learning and learn, instead of worrying about their family's economic situation. A little gift as this may bring joy to a child.
