Providing Books to Students of Poverty

My students need classroom sets of books that will allow them to experience the same literature as their peers in a differentiated manner to accommodate their needs.

My Students

Can you imagine being the child in class that is labeled as "different" or "special"? The kids who just "don't get anything" and "never know what's going on"? That is how special education students feel each time they are in a regular education classroom. They long to belong and blend in. Help.

I teach special education reading and language arts in a low income school in south central Kentucky.

The children in my class struggle with their disabilities in reading, and writing, not to mention autism, traumatic brain injury, ADHD, mood disorder, etc. My children don't have what they need to take care of them at home like they need. I can't help that. What I can help, however, is what they are provided here at school. My kids want to learn and they want to be "normal." By allowing them guided and differentiated readings of books their peers are reading they are gaining access to a level of instruction they have not had before. With school funding at an all time low, donations are needed to provide this need.

My Project

By allowing my students to have a class set of the popular young adult books I am requesting, I can give them access to common interests of their regular education peers. I can give them something to talk about with other kids. I can teach them reading and writing standards through this literature. I can differentiate my instruction in order to accommodate their individual needs. I can help them grow.

My kids are poor.

They are below average in education. They have so many factors against them. Please help me provide instructional opportunities to teach them, expose them to the content of their peers, and give them opportunities to learn beyond what they have had in the past. Thank you.
