My Project

Happy School Counseling Week! As a new member of the School Counseling department at Vinal Technical High School, I am attempting to create a safe, calm and comfortable environment for all of our students, grades 9-12. With an older building, bringing in furniture that helps with organization, seating, and ambiance is what helps elevate the space and make it a place where students *want* to visit and engage in sessions. School Counselors are working hard every day to relationship-build with our students, families and staff, so having an appropriate and welcoming space to do this is crucial to benefit our growing relationship dynamics.

High school students are often times seeking support from the School Counseling office to work through situations involving peers and group dynamics and personal relationships.

Having suitable seating for multiple students is important for everyone to organically engage with one another, which is why a larger seating area like a couch for students to sit on together, would be so helpful. Also speaking about families coming in for support, it is difficult to have a student or parent with standing room only, when addressing sensitive situations or having lengthier conversations.

Additionally, in a smaller and older space, having organization of items is also a key component to accommodating the comprehensive literature, documentation, and tools needed to effectively counsel without compromising the space needed to still see (sometimes multiple) students, staff, or family members. Having organization cubes and leveled carts allows students and the School Counselor to more easily navigate paperwork and the go-to tools most used during sessions (fidgets, tissue boxes, pens/pencils/paper to complete assignments, Chromebooks for assessments and resources, etc.)

I am so appreciative of any support for making this space a reality and hope this updated space will help encourage students to access their Counselor.
