Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This project is multi-fold and is intended to help my alternative high schoolers feel loved, supported, and cared for! With this, I hope to achieve an increase in motivation and engagement, while carefully tending to our major chronic absenteeism issue.

When giving my students an opportunity to voice their opinion as to WHAT they felt was missing in their classrooms, many of their feelings were mutual in what they lacked: (1) a clean working space, (2) rewards for their satisfactory work, (3) more time & options to fill their empty stomach, and (4) focused help with their personal issues.

There is no 1-size fits all description for my students, but each of them have their own set of extenuating circumstances! Here are some of the common situations they deal with:

*Living in foster care, group homes, or experiencing family dysfunction

*Poverty and limited access to necessities

*Gang involvement or criminal background

*Difficulty coping with social anxiety, anger, mental health, or learning issues

The potential in each of my students is HUGE! They deserve to have their basic needs met, that way they can WANT to be at school! Funding this project would mean my students having daily access to:

1. Tissues, sanitizer, and wipes to learn in a CLEAN environment.

2. Bandaids, deodorant, and feminine products to help them feel PRESENTABLE!

3. Breakfast options available first thing in the morning to help them feel NOURISHED and ready to learn.

4. Rewards when they do well so they can feel PROUD and ready to repeat!
