My Students
The importance of engaging in artistic experiences for inner city teenagers cannot be understated. In addition to serving as a much needed creative outlet, the arts also build confidence and provide students with a sense of pride.
I teach visual arts at a junior high school located deep in the northwest region of Philadelphia.
Our school is situated in a rough inner city area, plagued with high poverty and crime rates. Despite the many obstacles some of my 7th and 8th grade students experience in their young lives, they are full of life and perseverance. Many of these kids shine in the art studio. My students are genuinely good young people, full of tremendous potential that exceeds the financial limitations of our art supply budget (which averages less then $1 per student for an entire school year's worth of art supplies).
My Project
We have no music, dance or theater education. Only art, facilitated solely by me. Being the sole facilitator of creative expression for our students is a tremendous responsibility that I do not take lightly. In the past, Donors Choose has connected our classroom with a magnitude of immensely generous individuals who share my passion for bringing the arts to these youth. Donors Choose has truly become the backbone of our classroom, providing us with supplies that we simply could not afford otherwise; the supplies that have provided truly fantastic, enriching experiences for kids that both need and deserve them.
I am humbly asking that Donors Choose, once again, breathe life into our classroom by donating art supplies. I would like 20 class packs of a product called Model Magic (manufactured by Crayola). Model Magic is an easily manipulated modeling compound that can be used for endless project possibilities, including puppets, coil pots and masks (to name a few).
By providing our classroom with 20 class packs of Crayola Model Magic, you will be giving my 500 students endless opportunities for creative potential.
Engaging in the visual arts helps these kids to express emotions, build pride and develop both self discipline and confidence. Please consider donating to this project, and allowing dream projects to become realities.
