This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am starting over at a new school and am so excited to meet all of my students in grades K-8. Since this is my first year, I want my students to benefit as much as possible from their time in music class. Most of these students are low income and do not have the opportunity for music lessons outside of school. I would love to be able to see their smiling faces when they can learn how to play the piano or sing along to a ukulele.

It is a personal goal of mine to have all my students believe that they can sing or play an instrument, no matter their academic achievement.

Musical literacy is something that I strongly believe is connected to better test scores and is a gateway to creative discovery. Even students who have difficulty in their academic subjects can learn an instrument or benefit from someone playing an instrument while they are singing.

My Project

These materials will make such a difference in the way I can teach and my ability to provide meaningful lessons to my students. Most of my students would never be able to afford or have time for piano lessons or for ukulele lessons. Since I have the ability to pull my students out of class for small lessons, it will not only build their musicianship but their relationship with me and the chance to feel comfortable to make music.

Small group lessons, both in ukulele and piano, will help to boost the student's musical confidence and literacy.

They can then carry these skills with them whether for pleasure or to pursue music in a more academic fashion.
