My Students

My students are bright, creative, and full of energy! Being an athlete myself, I want to make sure that I give my students the opportunity to instill fitness into their daily lives.

Our school is an urban, high-poverty school with a very diverse student population.

We are also a Title I School with 90% in the free-and-reduced lunch program. Our funds are extremely limited and unfortunately, the playground equipment available to our students is slim to none. Everyday I supervise the playground during lunch recess, and they literally have no equipment. Most of our students are also too poor to join club sports or take a recreational class, but it's very clear how much they enjoy being active.

My Project

I am an athlete myself, and I know that without any equipment, it is very difficult to practice skills or even have the motivation to get active. It's heartbreaking to watch students wander the blacktop with no actual playground equipment! These students also do not have the opportunity to learn new games and practice the social skills and discipline that sports provide. I would love to give our students the opportunity to play and explore with quality equipment.

We all know that getting regular exercise is a key factor in reducing obesity, but without the opportunity to enjoy physically activity as a child, it is very difficult to carry on fitness habits into adulthood.

These fitness items can not only enrich students' lives on the playground on a daily basis, but also later in life as they learn to love being active.
