My Students

My students are between the ages of 16 and 24 and have many different reasons why they attend the school. As an ELL and English 1 and English 2 teacher, I work with students who are brand new to the country as well as students who have had some amount of time away from learning as a result of various obstacles. Some students have been living in D.C. their entire lives, while some have lived in D.C. for only a few months.

Regardless of the differences in student background, the students are motivated to learn and to graduate in order to start the next chapter of their lives.

They are hard-working and perseverant in school and out of school.

My Project

At our school all students are matched with a staff member and other students as a part of a mentoring group. During a typical day at our school, the students and staff spend 40 minutes with their group and with their mentor. During this time, students talk to each other and build community through activities.

With this project, I chose fun activities like tie-dye kits, watercolor sets, group board games and equipment for relay races so that students can work together and express themselves through art.

With these items students will be able to engage in arts and crafts activities, play team-building games, and build relationships through critical thinking activities. Students will have many options on what they would like to do during the period, but with all options, the goal will be to get to know each other better.
