As an instructional technology specialist, I collaborate with teachers to incorporate 3D design and printing into the curriculum. When teaching the basics of 3D modeling and design in Tinkercad, I encourage students to sketch their designs from the front, top, and side view using precise measurements. For example, in a 3D approaches to art class, we sketched and measured a paper towel roll to practice the process and build a model in Tinkercad. Students who are new to 3D design benefit from learning the process, and those who have some experience with 3D design have a methodical approach to designing more intricate projects.
To fully support students during the 3D design process, we need graph paper, pencils, erasers, and assorted measuring tools for precise measurements of various objects.
Right now, we share four rulers and use notebook paper or scratch paper to sketch. Those supplies don't provide students with the ability to produce a precise sketch for the 3D modeling program.
In addition to supporting 3D design within curriculum, we currently offer 3D printer use to all students in our school through our library's makerspace. It's important to use to offer equitable access to 3D printers so students can print without having to take a CAD (computer-aided design) course. Any student can complete orientation and a test print, then they are able to schedule print jobs for their hobbies, interests, class projects, replacement parts, and more for the duration of their enrollment at our school. In the past, we haven't offered much instruction in the makerspace to help students learn 3D design. With these materials, we can have 3D design activities and lessons in our library makerspace to support those users who wish to branch out from printing existing designs and print their own designs.
