Provide Equity With Hands-on-Learning to Students Growing Plants All Yearlong
Help me give my students with the supplies to grow food in the classroom, giving them equitable access to hands-on learning that promotes growth, collaboration, and a deeper understanding of science.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am deeply inspired by my students’ diverse backgrounds and their passion for learning. They come from various experiences, yet they all share a desire to engage in hands-on activities that reflect their unique strengths. By introducing a year-round classroom garden with a hydroponic growing system, grow lights, and hydroponic supplies, I aim to create an equitable learning environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive. The garden will serve as a powerful metaphor for equity—just as different plants require specific conditions to flourish, my students will learn that people have unique needs, and true equity is about providing the right tools for everyone to succeed.
The hydroponic systems and supplies will ensure that all students, regardless of background or learning style, can participate in meaningful, hands-on science lessons.
They will not only explore plant biology and environmental science, but also build empathy and teamwork as they care for the plants together. This project will empower students to see themselves as active contributors to their classroom and community, promoting equality and respect for one another’s strengths and needs.
What makes my students special is their eagerness to engage in learning that connects to their lives and interests. This project will celebrate their diversity and help them understand that growth, both in plants and in people, varies—but with the right environment, we can create a space where all students feel supported and valued.
