This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a school counselor responsible for the largest, Title I poverty level elementary school in the district. The student to counselor ratio is 500:1.
As a school counselor, I strive to make transitions a bit easier for students.
I serve farming families, military families, LGBTQ families, foster families, homeless families and families coping with varying degrees of mental health conditions and/or developmental/physical limitations. I need intrinsic ways to reach my students. Professional development opportunities are not available for school counselors due to budget cuts and lack of funding, nonetheless, I am required to meet state standards for helping my students with social, academic, career and mental health needs.
My Project
Some of my 3rd grade students read on a 1st grade level. Resources are needed by school counselors that weren't needed years ago. Counselors assist with academic, career and social emotional learning in schools. We are not a baby sitting and shoe tying service. We are professionals requiring professional resources to complete our Masters level requirements of employment. I need update resources to learn how to effectively implement tiered level academic interventions that help students find success and close these large achievement gaps. No student wants to fail and neither does any school counselor. I need updated resources to effectively serve my elementary students.
