My Students

Our school is a K-12 charter school, serving a student population comprised of 40% students with special needs and 60% students receiving free and reduced-price lunch. In contrast, the resident district for most of our students is 10% students with special needs and 10% free and reduced-price lunch.

Our school provides a welcoming and supportive environment for students who come from low-income households, but reside in an affluent district.

Our school is able to provide a fit for students who struggle academically and benefit from smaller class sizes, increased levels of interaction with staff, and modified curriculum. Our students receive the extra support they need while being able to remain in the regular education classroom.

My Project

Technology is an ever-present part of our lives and it is a tool that is used in virtually every industry. Having access to even a few tablet computers in my math classroom would be greatly beneficial to my students, but our school does not have the resources to sustain one-to-one technology for student use.

Utilizing tablets in the math classroom will allow me to better cater to the varying learning levels of each individual student.

By leveraging online math resources such as Khan Academy and Xtra Math, I will be better equipped to help students who are struggling to reach academic standards and students who are not challenged, to reach their full potential. This will help to ensure that the students of my school get the most of their math education.

While three tablets will get the students started and allow me to increase classroom engagement, I am working towards obtaining enough for a classroom set. That way, each student in the math class would be able to use a tablet at the same time. This gives each of the students the opportunity for individualized instruction instead of a select few.
