Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
According to the latest report released by TEA, over 80% of the students at my campus are economically disadvantaged. I have been teaching here for four years now, and this year my role is to teach reading to low-performing readers in first and second grade. Before teaching, I was a paraprofessional public librarian and my favorite part of that job was helping reluctant readers find the "right book" that transformed them into avid readers.
Data shows that struggling readers who are not on grade level before third grade continue to struggle throughout their entire education.
My goal for all of my students is to not only give them the support and skills they need to reach grade level, but also to foster a love of reading that will help motivate them to continue reading even when it is challenging.
Many of my students do not have access to any books at home and my current classroom library is quite small, so my students don't have many choices when it comes to reading. I have selected the books on this list to add to my existing collection: adding more of the types of books I know my students enjoy as well as books that will give them a wider range of genres, topics, and levels to choose from.
