Help me give my students workbooks to build on their writing skills and Scholastic News to capture and hold their interest to enrich their reading engagement in order to create a classroom magazine.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Audubon K-8 is an urban, low-economic, and high poverty school located in the southeastern portion of San Diego. Many of the students come from single parent homes or homes where there are multiple family units living together under the same roof. There are about 450 students enrolled at our school. Our school has a large English Language Learner population. The languages spoken amoung the students are Spanish, Tagalog, Samolian, Lao, Arabic, and Russian as well as English. All students attending Audubon qualify for the Free Lunch program.
My Project
By using enticing and exciting materials students will strengthen their reading and writing skills. My hope is that by providing high interest materials that my students will take on the role as author and design their own classroom magazine. My class, The Proud Pineapples, will achieve this by working in conjunction with writing lessons taught as a whole class and utilization of the writing workbooks to provide students a more tangible mentor text to use for their own writing. These materials will be used as part of guided writing groups. Scholastic News to capture and hold their interest to enrich their reading engagement. Scholastic News magazines are typically high interest, relevant to present students, and are highly engaging. These magazines will be used as independent or buddy readings for comprehension as well as helping to support the class project of our class magazine by providing a structure to their own creations.
