This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a variety of cultural and economic backgrounds and have a myriad of needs, with 98% of students qualifying for free lunch, and many live below the poverty line. Many have single parents who work multiple jobs, and my students either watch younger siblings or work after school to help pay the rent. Because of this, participating in private musical instruction or outside performance groups has not been an option for many. However, they are very creative and eager to learn. They desire to participate in extracurricular performance opportunities any chance they get.

For the majority of my students, the first time they ever perform on stage is during their high school career.

But they are no stranger to music. A good number of my students are new comers or first generation students in this country. They bring with them the different styles and sounds of their home countries, rich histories and cultures, languages, memories, passion, dedication and excitement.

Many have moved to this country with the hope of finding a new and better life filled with opportunity. My hope is to give every student the opportunity to succeed in music and performance whenever possible.

My Project

These items will help bring an added level of safety to my classroom for ALL students, not just those enrolled in my piano class. Each year, students are SO exited to see the keyboards in my classroom. However, I teach a variety of classes, not just piano. Students in other classes, like band and chorus, often like to turn on keyboards and plunk out a quick tune.

In this COVID world, I want to limit the number of people that touch each keyboard.

The dust cover will not only protect the keyboards from dust and other contaminants, but it will also protect them from constant student touch throughout the day. When a student finishes playing in class, they will be able to sterilize the keyboard and cover it to ensure that the keys remain sanitized and untouched by others. I generally teach one piano class of 18 students per semester. However, COVID has significantly limited my ability to use instruments in other classes. Having the keyboards sanitized and protected will allow us to use them for multiple classes without risking any contamination. These covers are a necessary PPE to keep everyone in my classroom safe.

This project also requests a power cord, piano stands and piano cases. These items will help us expand our program. We have had instruments donated over the years that do not contain all of their pieces. Purchasing these accessories will allow us to include more students in piano class and better protect our equipment! Thank you for your consideration of my classroom.
