My students need 22 2-GB Flash Drives to protect their work in a creative writing program.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. McNew's classroom raised $274
This project is fully funded
I am a fifth grade teacher in a high needs, inner city community. I work at a public school with about 300 students. I have a wonderful mix of languages and backgrounds in my building.
Our poems are perishing and our verses are vanishing. My students are involved in a wonderful Writer's Workshop program that gives them a chance to explore many different writing styles. We have practiced personal narratives, persuasive writing, and poetry so far this year. We write, edit, publish, celebrate, and share our work. Our final drafts are often typed up in the school's computer lab before we print them out. Lately, we are finding that our work is either gone or vandalized when we come in the next day. Our computers are outdated and unreliable. No one is sure where the work goes but it is gone. The other problem is that the shared computer folder for my class has, sadly, become a target for cyber-vandalism. Many nearly finished pieces have been altered in offensive and upsetting ways. It is a shared lab for the whole school and its after-school programs. As a community we are working towards a solution but we are not there yet.
If I was able to give the students access to Flash Drives I could better protect my young author's many works. I imagine that the drives would generally stay at school but they would also provide students who are home ill or missing class for family business a chance to easily transport work back to class. Gathering and saving information for projects and reports would also be much easier with this resource.
This seems like a small thing with all of the technology that is floating around but it would make a big difference to my kids. It is incredibly discouraging to spend days working on a piece of writing to loose it in an instant. The final stage of publishing is an important one and I could really use some support to make this work with my students. Your help could change writing from a cause of disappointment to a celebration. Thanks
