This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Brave, Kind, compassionate and motivated are four words to describe my students. This is their first year ever being in school and they are facing hardships all around everyday, but seeing their smiles you would not know.
I teach the most compassionate students I have taught in 22 years of teaching.
The students are facing challenges every day with their environment, Covid, the economy and more. They live in a very low income area. Many of the parents stayed home last year and lost income. So this year financially is harder than ever. The students are given 3 full meals a day and sent food for the weekend. The students wear masks all day ( Inside and out ) and are tested weekly for Covid. Despite all these challenges they come to school each day so excited to learn, so excited to share and also a place to feel safe.
To give a simple example of my students.. We had Santa Zoom our class this year. These children have very little. However, when Santa asked them what they wanted , they asked for things for their siblings or parents. These are 5 and 6 year olds
My Project
This last week I was so fortunate to have my DonorsChoose project of five tablets funded. I am so excited to introduce my students to great programs on their tablets. However, I worry about 5 and 6 year olds and dropping things. I am hoping to get child friendly cases that will help protect the tablets for years.
Without cases I am afraid of sticky fingers, germs, drops, spills and more in a Kindergarten classroom.
The Osmo program is a highly recommended program to help students with STEM, Math, Reading and more. I have always seen this come up in teacher groups and have read the most amazing things about it. I am hoping to begin with one and eventually get an OSMO for each device.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
