My Students

Do you remember the first time you sunk your fingers into play dough as a kid? My students love to build props with play dough for their grocery store bakery and other themes throughout the school year. The problem with play dough is, when it dries and gets dropped, it breaks into a million pieces.

My preschool students live in one of the roughest and toughest neighborhoods in our nations capital.

They are faced with neighborhood lockdowns where they cannot leave their homes to come to school or cannot leave school to go home. Despite the violence in their neighborhood, my students come to school eager to learn. They love the opportunities and roles that our new curriculum (Tools of the Mind) provide for them. Part of their love comes from the opportunity to build props for the themes of our curriculum.

My Project

The four Model Magic Compounds will be used to build props mainly for our restaurant and grocery store themes. As my students and I discovered last year, using play dough is not the best option for these props. With the Model Magic, students will be able to easily manipulate the material to build props for our themes. They can build donuts and cookies for the grocery store bakery, or pancakes for IHOP during our restaurant theme. Once the Model Magic dries, students will then be able to paint their creation. Being able to create their own props allows for students to take ownership of the theme creation as well as for them to share there own ideas and interpretation of their ideas.

This project is so important because if gives students the opportunity to take ownership of their learning and allows them to truly express their ideas and thoughts as they see them.

This Model Magic will allow them to help build. The props for our themes which will allow them to build their vocabulary and social skills. Using the Model Magic will also help students to develop their fine motor skills
