My Students

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." -Nelson Mandela

We are a community of fourth graders, within the School District of Philadelphia, who are very eager to learn.

Our classroom consists of 32 students, a few of which receive special education services, as well as students who are struggling, English-speaking learners. Being an urban school setting, 100% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunches which means many of my students do not have the resources or tools at home to help reinforce their learning.

Since implementing Reading Workshop into our Literacy block, the students have been increasing their reading stamina and growing as readers. Their passion for reading has been spreading like wildfire throughout our classroom, truly establishing a culture of reading. They come to school excited to learn and read, and look forward to Reading Workshop each day. The sadness when Reading Workshop is over for the day is both heartbreaking and inspiring.

My Project

My goal is to make my classroom a warm and calming environment where my students feel comfortable discussing themes of social justice during Reading Workshop. To help achieve this, I am requesting a large rug and small pillows. This large rug and small pillows will be placed in the front of the classroom and used as a gathering place during mini-lessons and share time. While gathered on the carpet, this is where the heart of Reading Workshop takes place as I introduce and model the mini-lesson's teaching point. As students are seated on the large carpet. they will feel more comfortable while reflecting and responding on a deeper level. By digging deeper into complex characters, the students are able to think on another level of understanding, by helping them answer questions while building tolerance through their understanding.

Studies show that teachers who create a warm classroom environment helps students to open up more while discussing complex issues.

I am confident that by adding a large rug and small pillows in my classroom will help my students feel inspired to expand their knowledge with more information and to reflect on more social justice issues in history, as well as the social justice concerns that still apply today.
