This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"The more you read the more things you know. The more that you learn the more places you will go." -Dr. Seuss. Reading is the key to knowledge! I tell my students that the more they read the more they will learn and be prepared for their futures. Books are the vehicles that will take them places.
My Kindergarteners are enthusiastic, inquisitive and wiggly!
It is quite challenging to keep them on task reading independently especially when most of them are non-reader or not fluent readers. However, they have an incredible thirst for knowledge. They love to hear stories read to them and participate in discussions about text. My students belong to a dual Spanish Immersion program located in an inner city school where the poverty and need is very common. Our elementary school is a PK-6 with about 900 students, 38 teachers, and of course budget cuts that impact their education. 100% of our students receive free lunch. We are in desperate need of listening center materials, as we have none in our classroom. I have purchased a mini classroom cassette and CD player along with an 8-station junction box to get our listening center started but, we really need read along books in both English and Spanish.
My Project
To help my students reach their Kindergarten reading goals, I read with them in small guided reading groups according to their reading levels. I have 5 small reading groups, but I can only read with two groups a day during our one hour Guided Reading block. Each day I work with 2 groups 30 minutes at a time. While I do that, I need the rest of my students to engage in independent reading and other literacy tasks. We do not currently have any read along book sets on tape or CD in our classroom. We borrow books from other Kindergarten teachers and even then there are not many options for sets in Spanish. I want my students to have their own materials readily available in their classroom. They need a variety of read along books in both English and Spanish along with a Read Along storage unit to keep listening center materials organized in the round table I set as the listening center. I'm excited for this project and can't wait to see them enjoy these stories in their listening center.
Your donations to this project will help my students with their love for reading and build their reading skills.
It will take them closer to achieving their Kindergarten reading goals in two languages and be prepared for first grade next year. My students love learning new things but they do struggle to read in both languages along with learning other content areas. However, despite their challenges they strive each day to meet their goals. Thank you for considering to help my students!
