This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students need inspiration to discover that learning about ancient civilizations is possible even through fiction. I hope that by introducing them to such an engaging book, their imaginations will be sparked!

My students are sixth-graders in an urban school with a very high percentage of students learning English as a second language.

We are a Title I school where students are from a very low SES, so the opportunity for students to own their own novel could make a big difference to their connection to learning through literacy.

My Project

This project will provide each student with their own individual copy of the novel The Egypt Game, as well as a teacher resource book to provide me with discussion guides and materials to use while teaching the novel. Students will be reading along in their own copies of the book as I read aloud daily. During this time, students will be able to annotate their own books, providing a launchpad for classroom discussion and further investigations into the mysteries of ancient Egypt.

My students deserve the opportunity to feel ownership of what they read.

I am positive that after reading, discussing, and thoroughly understanding the novel, it will be something they will treasure. Since many students have never had access to a longer novel such as this, it will give them the confidence to tackle greater challenges in the future!
