My Students

Currently, I teach 5th grade in a predominately African American school in Baltimore City with a great number of students who come from low-income households. The school is located in an urban neighborhood which services students who live in the community.

No one could have predicted a few months ago that our lives would be so changed and that school as we knew it would be so disrupted.

On March 13, 2020, my life as a teacher thoroughly changed. My students would not be returning for what I know now would be the remainder of the school year. However, with the onset of social distancing and the shutdown order, my students were experiencing yet another heavy burden; social injustice.

During the pandemic our students are experiencing and embracing a time in history where people of color are going through the tragedies of racial discrimination and social injustice. My students are witnessing vast protests, injustices on social media, news media discussions and conversations in their households. Therefore, I want to expose them to literature that will address the many questions they may have on the topic.

My Project

The multicultural library will be filled with books that will spark my students' interests due to the many incidents of social injustice that have occurred in our country during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The books in this project will contribute to making a safe environment for my students who are curious and who still have questions about social injustice and racial discrimination.

I plan to use these book as read-alouds for continued distant learning to spark discussions and understanding. I want the conversations that I have with my students to be filled with rich discussions that will ease their thoughts on the topic. My students will deeply benefit from these resources through my distant learning read-alouds to close the achievement gap and to understand the world around them.
