I teach 5th grade in a predominately African American school in Baltimore City. The curriculum that's developed in my district doesn't contain literature that has African American characters. Although my students love to read and write I wanted to provide them with a collection of literature that contains African American characters. As a 5th grade teacher, I take pride in building my classroom library, but my library lacked a collection of literary works pinned by notable African American writers. I want to provide my students with literature that relates to their own culture and social background as well as closing the achievement gap in efforts to overcome the ill effects of prejudice and discrimination for my African American students.
All cultures have their own unique history, but I want to expose my students to various African American writers who address some of the same issues that my students are sometimes faced with each and every day. My students will be able to make solid connections to the text and by providing them with a collection of literary works by African American authors it will give them the opportunity to learn about the strengths and weaknesses of the characters in the books in order to overcome obstacles that they may sometimes be faced with.
