Promoting Positive Self-Expression Through Visual Arts

Help me give my students paint and puppet making supplies to use in their counseling sessions.

My Project

Many of my students struggle with confidence and experience severe anxiety in school. I work with students in counseling sessions to develop their self-esteem, support them in coping with their anxiety, and identify ways for them to feel more comfortable in school. In addition to being fun, using art in our counseling sessions will teach students that it's okay to make mistakes, life can be messy, and you never have to clean it up alone. These skills will help them to build on the resilience that they already possess.

Art therapy strategies can be very supportive for students who are developing their confidence and emotion regulation skills.

One thing that I want to teach my students is how to make different colors with paint. Learning a new skill will be empowering and help them develop a sense of mastery. The process of mixing paints together is mesmerizing and has a calming affect that can regulate the nervous system. For my students that have difficulty expressing themselves in school, I will be having them make their very own puppets! The puppets will be used to help students express emotions in a way that feels safe for them (through their puppet). Using the puppet as an extension of the child can be helpful in reducing anxiety and stress around emotional topics.

Thank you so much for these much needed art supplies! The kids will really enjoy working with these materials and I'm confident that they will be proud of their creations.
