Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of our students struggle with self confidence. We have been working to build a growth mindset by believing in the power of yet. Our students are eager to please and want to do well. We have worked to build an accepting and positive classroom community and school community. Things aren't always easy and things don't always work out as we plan, but learning is a life long journey and we hope to make positive impacts of life outcomes. Our fifth graders have so much potential and hope to make this world a better place. We work tirelessly to inspire them each day.
My Project
I hold myself accountable for each students’ social, emotional and physical health as well as their academic learning. By this measure, I strive to make a meaningful connection with every student. For example, I check in with all students at the beginning of each day. Another way we build community connections is fully implementing the responsive classroom. Morning meetings each day allow students an opportunity to get to know each other. I also have “lunch with the teacher” as a weekly incentive. On average, I have lunch with a small group of students 2 out of 5 days each week. This has allowed me to engage in conversations with students in a more relaxed atmosphere. I have gleaned so much information about their hopes, dreams, fears and stressors.
My students and I need to understand and practice mindfulness.
They need me to provide them with tools to become more mindful in order to increase likelyhood of positive life outcomes. These resources will be used to make that a reality. I can share these books and practices to build an understanding of mindfulness. We will incorporate mindfulness exercises throughout the day in the classroom. Students will then be able to share with other family members and friends. I will be able to share with other teachers. This is the gift that will make the world a better place.
I believe one thing I do well is put forth my best effort to build a sense of belonging and build a positive and supportive learning community. I know I need to practice mindfulness too. My students and I will embark on this journey together.
