Promoting Positive Behaviors With Natural FoodsBorn This Way
My students need wholesome Kind bars, whole cashews and almonds to fuel their minds and bodies without overstimulation from artificial colors and additives in most of the foods they are accustomed to eating.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work at a Title 1 school in Staten Island, NY. They are 7th graders that all receive Special Education services and are in a classroom setting with 12 students and sometimes a Paraprofessional. Some receive Counseling services and some receive Speech Therapy as a related service well. Mostly all of my students come from poverty and do not have the family support financially or emotionally needed to be successful. I also teach many English Language Learners. They are all struggling to function in a positive manner in middle school and make their way during this crucial time in their lives.
My Project
My students suffer from ADHD, ADD, Bi-polar Disorder, Emotional Disturbance, Learning Disabilities, Speech and Language Impairments, and Autism Spectrum Disorder. The majority of the foods they are eating are over stimulating their bodies and minds with artificial colors, artificial ingredients, overly processed providing no nutritional value thus resulting in non-teachable behaviors at times. I believe teaching our children that they can still enjoy tasty and filling foods that are healthy and provide a slower release of sugars into their bloodstream from natural wholesome foods that are minimally processed is key and a direct correlation between their behavior and efforts in the classroom.
Because my students are not internally motivated to make an effort in school, I have implemented a positive rewards program in which students earn raffle tickets when they complete a classwork task, answer a question or any other positive type of behavior.
At the end of the week, I choose two students per class (3 classes total) that will win their prize. Due to my own limited funding, I have had to limit this raffle to once a week only and to only two students. If this project gets fulfilled , I will be able to choose a raffle winner or two each class every day! This will motivate my students as they need IMMEDIATE rewards that are tangible and that also feed their hungry bodies. If they keep eating foods with ZERO nutritional value they will constantly be hungry if their cells are not being satisfied with the proper vitamins and minerals needed.
My project incorporates a fun way to engage the students to behave and manage their behaviors and they will learn how fun it is and tasty to eat wholesome and healthy foods and hopefully change their eating patterns outside of school as well!
