Promoting Mental and Emotional Wellness With a Class Book

My Students

My students are becoming Super Readers! Even though most of my students come from backgrounds that haven’t emphasized education, we are working on changing that attitude. In my classroom, we embrace books, and we spend time reading books of our choice every day. We are inspired by each other's reading, and we share book talks and rich conversations about books.

My students are incredible young people who are going to change the world!

We have been reading books and stories about young people who have made major changes in their communities and even the whole world. I can't wait to see what each and every one of my students do for our world!

My Project

Our district has made the tough decision to remain distance learning through the first quarter of this school year. Although I have class sets of many books, they are meant to be shared with each of the three classes I have.

In order to begin reading a book together, I will need 65 copies so that every student can take one home.

What I love about this Newbery Award winner is that it is a graphic novel. All students can learn from this book! I hope to have great discussions about how the characters in the book deal with life, as well as how we can all handle our own situations. Many of my students deal with living in two different worlds and the emotional stress that goes with that. New Kid will help them process through this burden and help lessen it. I can't wait to share this fantastic book with my students.
