Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the privilege of teaching 33 fourth graders at a Title 1 school. The majority of my students receive free and reduced lunch. There are a range of ability levels in my class, from high-achievers to students with disabilities. Most of my class is made up of English Language Learners, while others struggle with learning disabilities, or are just behind. Many of their parents do not speak English and it is critical for them to have resources available in the classroom and to take home. The students in room 29 are eager to learn. They see themselves as tomorrow's leaders, and are bright, energetic, motivated, and responsible students.
My Project
My students need choice and freedom in reading, along with high interest books, to be engaged independent readers. The International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (Elley 1992) reported that the most important factor in the development of literacy is access to books. In my experience working with students, there is a direct correlation between the quality and quantity of books students read and the quality and quantity of the books available in the classroom library. By exposing my students to different types of books, reluctant and struggling readers gain options that build a love of literature. Building a literacy enriched classroom provides students with the opportunity to make meaningful connections to books that meets their interests and learning levels. There are many reluctant and struggling readers in my class that attend an intervention program, and would benefit from a classroom library that includes high interest low level books. There are students at and above grade-level that need to be challenged by exposure to a variety of genres and authors to meet their highest potential. They need to read daily to build their skills. Many of my students do not have access to books at home. By creating a literacy-rich environment, I hope to inspire students who chose to read well beyond the walls of a classroom.
