My students need choice and freedom in reading, along with high interest books, to be engaged independent readers. The International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (Elley 1992) reported that the most important factor in the development of literacy is access to books. By exposing my students to different types of books, reluctant and struggling readers gain options that build a love of literature. Building a literacy enriched classroom provides students with the opportunity to make meaningful connections to books that meets their interests and learning levels. They need to read daily to build their skills. Many of my students do not have access to books at home. By creating a literacy-rich environment, I hope to inspire students who chose to read well beyond the walls of a classroom.
