Promoting Inclusion with Books and Homemade Stickers

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
We call our classroom The Kindness Kingdom, and we start our day with a kindness promise! The emotional health and the inclusion of my first graders are critical. We cannot learn if our emotions are not regulated, and we don't feel seen in class. This project will enhance our book selection and encourage all students to celebrate the diversity we all represent. These books will support my first graders as we learn and grow together. They will allow all of my students to "see themselves" inside the books and feel represented.
In our classroom, we follow the Platinum Rule: Treat people better than you want to be treated!
Kindness is a guide in our lives. It is imperative to teach young students about the importance of racial justice and the representation of all students. The sticker-making materials will help us promote inclusion, equity, and representation around our school. The classroom decor items will enable us to create a bulletin board that celebrates our uniqueness.
The final component of this project is creating custom wind-up characters. With the wind-up mechanisms and air clay, students will develop characters to celebrate representation and inclusion.
