My students need the items being requested so that we can continue our urban gardening project. Students volunteer before school, after school and over the summer to learn about and care for our school community garden.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Eager, urban middle school STEM students. I teach in a very diverse school with students who are very passionate about STEM education. The students in my STEM classes are creative and hard working. Most of the students in my classes will be first generation college students and many plan to pursue careers in STEM fields, many of who aspire to be engineers. STEM resources are essential to enhancing these students’ curiosity and creativity. Providing hands-on classroom experiences gives my students the skills needed to be the best in their classes moving forward to high school, college, and beyond.
My Project
Having students work on the school community garden connects students to the school and our extended district community. Students that participate learn valuable life skills that they in turn teach to their peers and family members. As we begin our second year of garden club we are requesting seeds, soil, sand, and planting trays to get our garden up and running. These materials will allow us to start plants in the school greenhouse. These plants will be distributed to our school community, used to plant our school garden, and sent to elementary schools across the district to start their gardens. Garden club members look forward to promoting healthy eating with their plant distribution, enjoying healthy eating when we enjoy our harvest and sharing the message with elementary students as we distribute starter plants for their gardens. Also new this year we will have a flower distribution to share love in honor of MOMS for Mothers Day at our school.
