Promoting Healthy Activities During Our School Year and Cold Winters!

My students need materials for an exercise/yoga calm room at school, a canopy for rainy and sunny day activities, 2 wobble chairs, a timer, and other items to promote fitness, exercise, and activity daily.

My Students

I am a first-grade teacher in a wonderful school in Wisconsin. My students are very special, and I just love going to school every day to see the sparkle in their little 5- to 8-year-old eyes. I also get to connect with students of various ages during and after school. I truly have the most special job in the world and treasure every day with my students! We participate in so many fun activities throughout the year, and our hope is to add even more.

My Project

The students I work with are so excited about these project requests! Last year, teachers had a training on Zones of Regulation, which uses Yoga, Stretching, Breathing, and other activities to help students focus, alleviate stress, and promote fitness. I did some simple activities in my class and didn't have enough materials to go full speed ahead. I was a bit skeptical at first, but WOW, did I see a difference in my students. My students could see a difference, and for several this activity and calming breathing made a huge difference for them! Some even turned behavior around completely! And this is no exaggeration! They want more. Our students do not get as much recess time as they used to, and in the winter, we have below zero temperatures a lot, which keeps students in the classroom for recess and does not allow them to get out their energy in a positive way. I feel bad for them. I am requesting yoga, Pilates, and Tai Chi DVD's, along with yoga mats, balance balls, and other fun equipment in order to create a Yoga Calm/ Zones of Regulation Room next to my classroom. I want my children to be able to stretch, breathe, and become fit in this room in order to reach their 60 minutes of fitness a day on normal days of school, and on those days when it is way too cold to be outside. I am requesting 2 Wobble Chairs for my classroom, so students who need to can wiggle while they work. I am requesting a canopy for outside activities on sunny or rainy days. And finally, I am requesting a giant timer and some game supplies for activities in and outside of the classroom.
