Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Socially responsible designers are how I describe my middle school scholars. As a science educator at GS, I see my students as part of the present and future scientific and engineering community. Each day scholars show me a willingness to persevere through real-world problems that impact their everyday environments that are similar to actual challenges scientists and engineers face in today’s workforce. The majority of GS students are from diverse families who live in or near our inner-city neighborhood school’s community. Our school has an 80% poverty rate. GS students are eager to use the newest technologies that Apple has to offer.
GS promotes interests in careers in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM).
Our mission is: With integrity, GS is devoted to increasing awareness and promoting academic excellence in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. It is our goal to produce scientific attitudes, innovation, and science-based learning opportunities.
My Project
Having the ability to use this high quality multifunctional color laser printer, students will be able to promote health and wellness through the nature connections they spotlight around the school grounds using their student created prints. Students will be able to create signage in both Spanish and English around the outdoor spaces of their school to suggest opportunities for the school community to connect with urban wildlife.
When people access the school's public space they will see student made signage that advertises upcoming events around the school that benefit mental health through numerous opportunities for the community to be involved that encourages inclusiveness for the school's diverse population.
Students will also be able to educate neighbors that share the common space to also clean up after their pets, because their outdoor play space needs to be kept clean so that it does attract unwanted pests like rats that are attracted to fecal matter. Students will also create visuals that emphasize the importance of picking up trash around the school and making sure to take advantage of recycling whenever possible.
