My Students

Our students are Scholars. They are provided a safe space to take risks, be vulnerable, and develop a sense of childhood curiosity and wonder.

They are thirsty for knowledge, eager to please, and desperately want to be better at "school”.

We have worked so very hard to cultivate a strong culture of learning that I can honestly say that their drive for success is inspirational. They have endless energy and enormous hearts!

Our Scholars are innocent, kindred spirits who deserve so much more than what our society has given them. For many of our students, their future relies solely on their experiences in our school. Regardless of the unthinkable barriers that our scholars experience outside of our four walls, they know that our belief in them will never waver.

My Project

This project is about giving my Scholars access to high quality picture books that help them find the courage to be true to themselves.

The titles in this project invite young Scholars to engage with the world in a new way and see how everyone is connected, and that everyone matters.

From books that celebrate the beauty, history, and magic behind names to books that highlight the many different languages to say "hello" to varying races and cultures, these picture books highlight diversity in the most beautiful ways. Many of the books in this list empower kids to express themselves in every color, including characters of different races, genders and abilities to help Scholars learn about all the incredible colors that fill their world. Some books provide a straightforward introduction to gender, presenting clear and direct language for understanding and talking about how we experience gender: our bodies, our expression and our identity. This list also contains a diverse selection of over 150 nursery rhymes from 23 countries, providing a unique look at the similarities and differences in folk songs, stories and rhymes across the globe. Included are also several fairy tales with characters and cultures that closely represent the students and families that I serve.

The titles in this project also tackle sensitive and important lessons, such as racism & white supremacy. These books represent a diverse group of young kids as they discover so many different ways to speak up and make their voices heard! Hearing these stories remind young Scholars that there are wonderful, good, caring people everywhere we turn—and that it's important to strive to be a good, caring person.
