Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I'm incredibly lucky to teach 11th grade AVID students at Skyline High School in Mesa Arizona. We are located east of Phoenix is a working class neighborhood. We are designated as a high poverty neighborhood.
The Advancement Via Individual Determination program specifically looks for the "middle of the road" students and put them on a college bound path.
In the AVID classroom we work on skills that help students prepare for for a college future. Two days a week in the AVID classroom students participate in tutorials to collaboratively work on challenging questions from their rigorous courses, students build resumes, research colleges, research majors, research and apply for scholarships, etc.
My Project
At least 2 days a week the Magnetic U-Stand Whiteboard will be used to create small, engaging, collaborative teams. Student teams will work together using the Socratic method of questioning to work through challenging questions they have encountered in any of their current courses. We will also be able to use the boards to engage in review sessions to prepare for the Advanced Placement exams. All of this will help students to deepen their knowledge about the subjects they are studying
At the moment students are stuck hovering over very small white boards.
The new larger boards would allow to students to better engage in the collaborative process without having to constantly start and stop the process.
Half of students from low‑income households
