Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have amazingly resilient students who come from a very low socioeconomic background. For many of my students, school is their safe place; they are excited to come to school and learn how to be a valued member of society. They are gaining confidence, finding their purpose, and treating others with respect and empathy. This year we have implemented restorative practices and circles school-wide. I have also been researching and incorporating several Social and Emotional Learning strategies on my own.
My Project
Many of my students lack the necessary social skills to be successful while learning. Being able to identify what they are feeling and communicate that with others is a skill we actively have to teach. We work on being the best versions of ourselves and contributing positively to our community.
Games are the perfect tool to introduce and teach social emotional skills.
These are the skills that help students become more self-aware, develop positive relationships, show empathy towards others, manage emotions, use self-control, resolve conflicts, and make positive decisions. Building positive social skills at a young age creates community and citizenship that will benefit students throughout life.
I would also like to incorporate the story The Wild Robot into our novel studies. It's a story about self realization and confidence. The robot uses uses kindness to develop friends, family, and a peaceful life for herself. The social skills we learn in class will be reinforced during novel studies.
