My students need non-fiction reading that captivates them and makes them want to flip their pages.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are the future, a very bright future. They are an amazing group of little people who come to school everyday ready to learn. Many of them have huge obstacles in their lives, but they do not use that as an excuse. They are the most motivated and eager group of nine and ten year olds you will ever meet.
My fourth grade class is made up of thirty-two, incredible students, many of them coming from Spanish speaking households or receiving free or reduced price lunch.
I work at a Title One school. This is a huge testament of the level of poverty the students live under. The achievement gap is not a myth; it is alive. My goal is to fight side-by-side with my students to overcome the barriers they may face!
My Project
Reading should be an activity that brings a smile to a child’s face. When I was in a class that had a plethora of books on animals, what I noticed was an intrinsically motivated group of kids. They wanted to read for pure pleasure. I have noticed that classes that do not have lots of reading options and certain children don’t seem to love the process. If a student can decode words, read for comprehension and summarize what they have read, but do not like to read, then in my opinion, the student has been short-changed.
Non-fiction is the hardest thing for my students.
I am writing this grant in hopes of not only teaching kids to comprehend non-fiction, but to get them to love reading about real things in their world. One hundred percent of this grant will go towards getting non-fiction books.
