This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a middle school special education math teacher. My students come from low income homes and rarely get to interact with technology. Our school received SmartBoards and projectors through a grant 7 years ago. The bulbs are beginning to burn out & the school can not afford to replace them.
The children I encounter on a day to day basis are faced with insurmountable obstacles.
On top of their special education classification, some live in shelters, others have parents incarcerated, siblings in gangs, etc. Often they are stressed and frustrated by their environment. With that said when they come to school and see these advance modern educational tools that they have loved and enjoyed in the past sitting in a corner collecting dust, to them it is just another slap in the face.
My Project
Under the new core standards rolling out nation wide, students are required to understand the many ideas and concepts from all areas of math. I love using the SmartBoard and the interactive activities keep my students fully engaged and eager to participate. When I project, I can model and visual display step by step the mathematical process. When introducing a new concept they don't understand I can pull up a real situation and project it on the spot. Supplying my classroom with a replacement bulb for our SmartBoard projector would be a blessing for our classroom.
Please support my project so I can continue to make use of this great multimedia educational tool with my special education math students.
