My students are highly impacted by physical and mental disabilities. We like to have fun and utilize technology when it is available. My students love to listen to stories and music, especially during calendar time.
My classroom is part of a center-based special education program in Northern Michigan.
We serve students and their families from four different counties. This is a service area of nearly 2400 square miles. These four counties are very rural and poor. Unfortunately, for them this means there are not much in the way of funding.
My students thrive on structure and routines in the classroom. We work a lot on communication. In my class we use a lot of visuals and pictures. In my classroom we work on functional communication so that when my students move on in life they can communicate with those around them.
This projector will help my students to have a consistent easy Visual schedule for our days. This will also help to allow my students to practice making choices throughout the day.
For my students being able to make choices throughout their day is very important.
Selecting visuals from the board will help to establish their understanding of alternative communications. Throughout the day in our class my students make choices on preferred activities, snacks, and circle time routines.
In my class, our day is structured using visuals and many different ways of communication. Visuals schedules are very important for us. They help us keep our day running smoothly and functional. Most importantly, being able to use alternate communication will help my students to be able to function outside the classroom setting.
